Our History

Construction on the Washington County Convention Center began in 1977 and was completed in 1979 with funding by Washington County, the City of Greenville, and the US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration under the Local Public Works Act.

The project was administered by the Washington County of Supervisors, which at the time included Lon D. Pepper, President; Lonzo D. Peacock, Vice-President; Jan Z. Acker; Mrs. Fred Neal; Virgil L. Sandifer; Robert L. Taylor, Clerk; and George H. Slade, Attorney.

Members of the City Council of Greenville were William C. Burnley, Jr., Mayor; Gerald L. Abraham; Betty Ellis; Peyton S. Irbyh; Sarah H. Johnson; Jerre F. Lane; and Fred McCourt. The Architectural Firm for the project Kaplan and Oakman, AIA, and C. E. Frazier Construction Company, Inc. was the General Contractor.

The architect for later additions to the Center was Mills & Mills of Greenville.
